Young Atim, whose father was murdered, is ordered by his grandfather to avenge his family. Determined to take revenge, Atim looks for Nassara, his father's torturer. Instead of finding a cold-blooded murder, Atim meets a charitable baker and soon-to-be father. When Nasara asks to adopt him, Atim pretends that he wants to get his father's approval. He brings Nassar to the desert to meet his grandfather

How We Got Where We Are (with Corn) Today
Corn has been implicated in slavery, colonialism, poverty, and obesity, at the same time that it is promoted as a panacea for hunger and even climate change. How did our individual and collective choices cause this humble grain of the Americas to become a global commodity, alternative fuel solution, and mutant pariah? Social science and humanities professors share their disciplines' unique perspectives on contemporary environmental issues related to corn agriculture and its byproducts:

Andy Smith, American Studies
Caroline Lee, Anthropology & Sociology
Christopher Ruebeck, Economics & Business
Rebekah Pite, History
James Lennertz, Government & Law

Join the class of ENG 140: Introduction to Film for a screening of the film KING CORN (2007). Two recent college grads discover where America's food comes from when they plant a single acre of corn and follow it from seed to the dinner plate. Science of Success
The purpose of this 50-minute workshop is to assist high performing students as well as struggling students to maximize their efforts and achieve greater success in the classroom. Many students spend significant amounts of time studying and yet their efforts may yield less than optimal results. This workshop will present several best practices that can enhance motivation, memory, and concentration. Last year more than half of the first-year class attended voluntarily. Of those who attended, approximately 94% stated they would be likely to use the information.
There is no RSVP needed. It is my sincere hope that, after participating in this session, students will achieve more, both in and out of the classroom, and their levels of engagement will be heightened.

Mooladé
Director O. Sembene takes on the issue of female circumcision, still common in Africa. Set in a village, four young girls face a ritual purification involving genital mutilation. They flee to the house of Collé Sy, who invokes the custom of "mooladé" (sanctuary) to protect the fugitives. Sembene sets the action amidst a colorful tapestry of village life and expands the narrative beyond straightforward realism, employing an array of mythic overtones and musical numbers. Mooladé is a film about heroism in daily life and the "underground struggle" of people which is often overlooked by their governments and the world.

eighth blackbird

Since storming onto the classical music scene a decade ago, eighth blackbird has thrilled audiences throughout the world with their fluent, engaging musical flair and their boldly innovative performance style.

The Grammy-winning ensemble returns to the Williams Center to perform their new two-part commission, The Only Moving Thing. Part one, Steve Reich’s Double Sextet, features the interplay of live performance and pre-recorded sound, with virtuosic rhythmic patterns and joyous, dance-like melodies.

Part two, singing in the dead of the night by the Bang on a Can All-Stars composer collective of David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and David Gordon, is vividly theatrical, with stage movement choreographed by Susan Marshall.

Bamako
A trial pitting African civil society against the World Bank and the IMF has set a stage in the courtyard of a home in Bamako, Mali. As trial witnesses air indictments against the multinational economic machinery, life in the courtyard presses forward. Chaka, an unemployed father, is preoccupied with the breakup of his marriage to Melé, a popular singer. In the midst of testimonies made at the trial, the juxtaposition of Chake and Melé's story give a voice to Africa's silent majority. Filled with warm colors and inspirational music, Bamako voices Africa's grievances in an original and profoundly moving way. On the quad. Watch this page in case of inclement weather!

Plays from the Provincetown Players
In makeshift theaters on a wharf at the tip of Cape Cod and in the heart of Greenwich Village, the Provincetown Players created exciting new plays that exploded old ideas and pushed American drama into the modern age.

Short plays by original members of this ground-breaking group—Susan Glaspell, Floyd Dell, Eugene O'Neill, John Reed, and others—offer a kaleidoscopic look back at America's first real bohemians in the turbulent years when the hangover from the Great War turned into the Roaring Twenties. Directed by Michael O’Neill.
