Math Bowl!
IT’S LIKE TEAM JEOPARDY, BUT WITH MATH QUESTIONS

Sample toss-up questions:

1. Name a mathematician at Lafayette who’s name can be rearranged to spell SETS ON FIRE.
2. What shape are the faucets in the bathrooms of Pardee?
3. What is the sum of the first 4 primes?

Here’s how we run the show: There are four teams with 4 people on each team. Like college bowl tournaments, there will be a buzzer system that lets you buzz in to answer the question. Toss-up questions will be worth 10 points, bonuses are worth more. Your team gets a crack at a bonus if they answered the toss-up correctly.

There is a sign-up sheet in the math lounge - make sure you sign up before all the slots are full!

Discussion of Gerald Graff's "Clueless in Academe" sponsored by the Teaching & Learning Committee
The Teaching and Learning Committee invites faculty to participate in a series of discussions based on Gerald Graff's book "Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind"(Yale, 2003). Graff combines recent research and provocative arguments relating to the compartmentalization of academic disciplines, the difficulty of academic discourse, and obstacles to teaching argument and critical thinking in higher education--as well as a few modest proposals for addressing these issues.

Books are available free at the Dean of the College's office for faculty interested in joining some or all of the discussions. The third discussion will take place in Gilbert's Annex at 4:10pm on Wednesday, December 3.

Please contact Chris Phillips (phillipc@lafayette.edu) or Rebecca Metzger (metzgerr@lafayette.edu) with any questions.

Tech Clinic Mid-Project Presentation: The Nurture Nature Center
Tech Clinic is a group of 6 Lafayette students and 2 faculty members from different disciplines who are contracted to solve real world problems for a specific client. A variety of perspectives are taken to ensure that a truly imaginative and inventive solution is created.

The tech clinic for '08-'09 is working with the Nurture Nature Foundation to help in the design of the Nurture Nature Center. The goal of the project is to create a flood museum "devoted to educating the public about the flooding problem that has become so urgent in the region and elsewhere.”

Working to engage the local community as well as Lafayette College in the issue of flooding, the tech clinic has been working on several projects that could be a great addition to the learning environment of the museum. There will be a mid-project report in the Gold Room at the Eastonian at 2:30 pm on Friday, December 5th. We hope that anyone who is interested will be able to attend and support your fellow students.
