Star Trek
![]() On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien vessel. He was looking for Ambassador Spock, who is a child on Vulcan at that time, disdained by his neighbors for his half-human nature. Twenty years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker inspired by Capt. Christopher Pike to fulfill his potential in Starfleet even as he annoys his instructors like young Lt. Spock. Suddenly, there is an emergency at Vulcan and the newly commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Nyota Uhura, Hikura Sulu, Pavel Chekov and even Kirk himself thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will have an adventure in the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever even as the new version of it is just beginning. Ethel
![]() ETHEL’s “high octane” artistry straddles the arenas of classical chamber music and contemporary work, moving smartly and confidently from Bang on a Can marathons and BAM’s Next Wave Festival to the Grand Canyon Music Festival and the recent gala reopening of Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. In the same creative mold as Kronos and Turtle Island, the group modulates traditional string quartet instrumentation into creative textures with amplification and sampling. Fiercely eclectic in their palette, they mix and mingle forms of the traditional Western canon with world music, jazz, and occasional rock and funk. “ETHEL created a world in which classical music had never grown distant, a world in which it was as fresh and direct as crowds dancing in the street.” —The Wall Street Journal 10 - 11 p.m.
Nelly's Echo (sponsored by LAF Gilbert's Committee)
![]() Who am I? I am a boy with a guitar in his hands who has got something to say. I am at home on stage, with one mic, my guitar (Josie) and an audience with eager ears. I really am happy when I'm performing and I hope to touch every person I come in contact with, one melody at a time. I got the music bug when my current bass player, classmate and friend Cynthia Simmons urged me into trying some of my originals at local open mics. At that time, it was more of a stress relief from the rigors I went through in grad school and life in general. That bug has consequently spread into several shows, several band members, ups, downs, and my first EP "Live Love n Laugh." Gilbert's Cafe

I THINK. I ADAPT. I EVOLVE. First Reeder Fellows Discussion for Fall 2009
Charles Robert Darwin realised and presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, through the process he called natural selection. In modified form, Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.
How did the theory of evolution changed the way we see ourselves as a species? And how about its influence on the purpose of our lives? How can we reconcile the theory of evolution with the religious faith? Dinner starts at 6pm and discussion starts at 6.30pm. Please RSVP at hasegand@lafayette.edu at least 12h in advance if you are coming to dinner too so we can make sure we have enough food for everybody. 7 - 8 p.m.

Trey McIntyre Project
![]() Choreographer Trey McIntyre won great acclaim with the many dances he created for such groups as American Ballet Theater, Stuttgart Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance, and Houston Ballet, where he served as resident choreographer until 2007. Born from an ad hoc festival group and now incorporated as a year-round company based in Boise, Idaho, Trey McIntyre Project has launched a new era in contemporary dance, with a crack ensemble of nine dancers trained in modern and balletic technique. McIntyre’s burgeoning repertory features many new commissioned works, two of which will be shown at Lafayette: White Bird’s Portland, Oregon hit, titled (serious), set to music of Henry Cowell; and Sun Road, created for Wolf Trap’s Face of America series of tributes to America’s national parks, this one a choreographic portrait of Glacier National Park. The Proposal (LAF Movie)

When the government investigates, the two are forced to spend the weekend with his parents in Alaska in order to sell the lie. An Essential Element of Microbial Life: Trafficking Iron and Siderophores on the High Seas
Dr. Alison Butler,
Department of Chemistry, UC Santa Barbara Alison Butler's research is focused on the chemistry of how organisms, especially marine algae, process metals from the environment, a specialty known as bio-inorganic chemistry. Her main interests are vanadium-based enzymes in algae, and how bacteria acquire iron. The transition metal composition of the ocean is unique with a relative abundance of Mo and V, and sparse in Fe. We are studying the mechanism of acquisition of iron, and other metals, by marine bacteria. We are investigating the types of siderophores produced by marine bacteria and various characteristics of these siderophores. Hugel Science Center Room 103

McKelvy Dinner/Discussion
Recently, controversy has arisen among some students over the plaque in Kirby Civil Hall of Rights, the text of which reads, in part:
"This Hall of Civil Rights is ... to provide facilities for instructions in the Anglo-Saxon ideals of the true principles of constitutional freedoms including the right of man to own property and do with it as he will, ... and incidentally the right to sell his labor as he chooses, and to enjoy the fruits thereof without molestation or undo restraint, and the study of the attainment of these rights, and the development of these ideals in the history of the human race and to encourage individual initiative and attainment among young men, ..., and to combat doctrines which minimize the importance of leadership, and which would restrict the individual from using all his powers to the full ..." In Sunday's discussion, led by Chris Nial and Glen Tennyson, we will discuss the text of the plaque, whether it should be protested, and, if so, why. McKelvy House

Reeder Discussion: Digital Media, Rights Management and the Future of Free.
In a world where the reproduction, modification and distribution of digital information becomes easier almost daily, there are a host of unanswered questions. How does copyright apply in the digital realm? How should it be enforced? Who should enjoy what rights, and who has responsibilities? Who will pay for the creation of content if it is expected to be free? What constitutes fair use? Are newspapers dying? Should they be saved? The list goes on.
The one thing that does seem to be for sure is that as digital tech continues becoming more pervasive, there will continue to be winners and losers -- those who realize how to adapt their goals to an evolving information landscape, and those who don't. Who will win, who will lose, and what does that mean for the rest of us? 6 p.m.

Generalized Dice Games and Voting Lorenzo Traldi A simple dice game involves two players who roll identical dice; if the results are different then the winner is the player whose die has rolled the higher value. In a generalized dice game, instead, the two players roll non-identical dice; in the long run the players need not tend to have equal numbers of wins and losses, even if their rolls have the same expected value. These games were discovered by Efron and popularized by Gardner in Scientific American. In accordance with Arrow's Theorem, they can be surprisingly complicated. Pardee 217

The internet age poses new conundrums with respect to the US constitutional guarantee of freedom of the press.
People can tweet anything from everywhere and take it to the web, virtually becoming guerilla journalists. This has caused concern within the government, especially regarding the use and abuse of confidential sources: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/17/opinion/17thu1.html?_r=1 http://www.rcfp.org/ In the discussion, led by Jayne Miller and Christian Benante, we will consider -- among other topics -- news sources, social networking, when releasing information becomes dangerous, what is and is not the press, and where the government should have the right to intervene given the freedom of the press granted in the constitution. Serious questions now loom concerning who really owns this data when so much is shared, expectations of privacy when it is so readily indexed, and whether or not we can continue to innovate when its value is so great. In this brown bag we'll talk about threats to your Internet security, privacy, and freedom, and what you can do to protect yourself. Bring your own lunch, if you wish. The Politics of Domestic Violence in Postcommunist States
Presenters: Raquel Aledo'10 & Eva Neykova'10
Advisor: Prof. Katalin Fabian (Dept. of Government and Law) By analyzing new Eastern European policies against domestic violence, we investigated the EU's effects on governments among the Union members entering in 2004 (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia), and contrasted them with the 2007 entrants Romania and Bulgaria, as well as the candidate countries of Croatia and Montenegro. Given that the EU indirectly affects its member states' social policy, there is a long-standing debate about the direct causal effect of the EU on its member states regarding non-economic matters, such as domestic violence.
