New Visions: Black and White Photography in Contemporary Art
New Visions: Black and White Photography in Contemporary Art exhibition at Allentown Art Museum, Lafayette College and Lehigh University.

The coordinated exhibition, the first time these three institutions have engaged in a joint project will be drawn from one of this region's major collections of late modern photography. The collection, formed by Arthur and Anne Goldstein, includes over 100 black and white works. Each institution has taken one of the major themes in contemporary photography for exploration, and connections and distinctions among the three exhibitions will be emphasized as the themes are explored.

"Imagination" - Allentown Art Museum;
"Identity" - Lehigh University
"Memory" - Lafayette College

The exhibition has been organized by the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, with venue exhibitions organized by the Allentown Art Museum.

Star Trek

On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien vessel. He was looking for Ambassador Spock, who is a child on Vulcan at that time, disdained by his neighbors for his half-human nature. Twenty years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker inspired by Capt. Christopher Pike to fulfill his potential in Starfleet even as he annoys his instructors like young Lt. Spock. Suddenly, there is an emergency at Vulcan and the newly commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Nyota Uhura, Hikura Sulu, Pavel Chekov and even Kirk himself thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will have an adventure in the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever even as the new version of it is just beginning.

Ethel

ETHEL’s “high octane” artistry straddles the arenas of classical chamber music and contemporary work, moving smartly and confidently from Bang on a Can marathons and BAM’s Next Wave Festival to the Grand Canyon Music Festival and the recent gala reopening of Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.

In the same creative mold as Kronos and Turtle Island, the group modulates traditional string quartet instrumentation into creative textures with amplification and sampling. Fiercely eclectic in their palette, they mix and mingle forms of the traditional Western canon with world music, jazz, and occasional rock and funk.

“ETHEL created a world in which classical music had never grown distant, a world in which it was as fresh and direct as crowds dancing in the street.” —The Wall Street Journal

Nelly's Echo (sponsored by LAF Gilbert's Committee)

Who am I? I am a boy with a guitar in his hands who has got something to say. I am at home on stage, with one mic, my guitar (Josie) and an audience with eager ears. I really am happy when I'm performing and I hope to touch every person I come in contact with, one melody at a time.

I got the music bug when my current bass player, classmate and friend Cynthia Simmons urged me into trying some of my originals at local open mics. At that time, it was more of a stress relief from the rigors I went through in grad school and life in general. That bug has consequently spread into several shows, several band members, ups, downs, and my first EP "Live Love n Laugh."
