Susan Averett, Dana Professor and head of economics and business, is quoted in an article published on the Center for the Advancement of Health’s web site about emerging trends in the overall health of single and married people. An excerpt follows: However, Susan Averett, Ph.D., professor of economics and business at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., said that the “data cannot tell us definitively if marriage is the cause of the change in self-reported health or some other unobserved factor” is at work.

Christine Moore ’08 to Study at Stanford with NSF Research Fellowship

Christine Moore ’08 will pursue a Ph.D. in environmental fluid mechanics and hydrology at Stanford University with the help of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Her achievement was featured today in an article in her hometown newspaper the Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va. Moore, who graduated May 24 with a B.S. in civil engineering, is the fourth woman engineering student from Lafayette in the last six years to receive the NSF fellowship, and the sixth woman student overall.

Professor Mark Crain Featured in Long Island Business News
Research by Mark Crain, Simon Professor Political Economy and chair of Policy Studies, was featured in the April 4 edition of Long Island Business News. The article, “For small biz, a ray of hope in the regulatory jungle,” discusses the effects government regulation on both small businesses and the consumer. An excerpt follows: A 2005 Office of Advocacy study by economist W. Mark Crain, from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, found that the costs of federal regulation topped $1.1 trillion in 2004. By the way, that's roughly what the federal government raked in through the personal income tax in 2007. And the regulatory burden has only grown in subsequent years.

WWL-TV, Channel 4 News in New Orleans, spotlights Lafayette's Economic Empowerment and Global Learning Project in a story on President Bill Clinton's Global Initiative University Conference at Tulane University. At the conference, Kavinda Udugama ’09 (Kandy, Sri Lanka), Lori Gonzalez ’10 (Bronx, N.Y.), and Katherine Reeves ’10 (Colorado Springs, Col.), made a presentation on the Lafayette initiative, which encourages economic and social entrepreneurship in Honduras, New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, and elsewhere. Gladstone Fluney Hutchinson, associate professor of economics and business, heads up the project.

Kiplinger’s Calls Lafayette One of Nation’s Best Values
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance singles out Lafayette, Princeton, and Caltech in a feature story about the top values in private colleges and universities in its April issue. In January, the author of the article, Jane Bennett Clark, interviewed students, faculty, and administrators, including President Daniel Weiss; Provost Wendy Hill; Arlina DeNardo, director of financial aid; and Debra Perrone ’08 (Fair Lawn, N.J.), a civil engineering major. The article accompanies Kiplinger’s latest rankings of values in private schools. The best-value rankings measure both academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. Lafayette places No. 16 among the nation’s top 50 values in liberal arts colleges.

Lafayette Ranks Fifth in Percentage of African American Faculty
In its Autumn 2007 edition, The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education (JBHE) ranked Lafayette fifth among the nation’s 50 leading liberal arts colleges and universities in the percentage of full-time African American faculty members. Using data collected from the United States Department of Education, JBHE shows that African American faculty members make up 6.1 percent of the total full-time faculty at Lafayette. Other institutions in the top five on the list were Swarthmore College, Occidental College, Mount Holyoke College, and Haverford College, with Haverford leading the list with 9 percent. According to JBHE, African Americans make up 5.3 percent of all full-time faculty at colleges and universities nationwide.

First Lafayette African American Graduate Featured in National Media

David Kearney McDonogh, Class of 1844, was featured in the Autumn 2007 edition of The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. The article highlights McDonogh’s journey to earn a Lafayette degree, despite being a slave. McDonogh was the first African American graduate from Lafayette and, according to The Journal, one of only 40 African Americans in the country to receive a college degree prior to the Civil War. However, unlike the other college graduates, McDonogh was the only one to do so while being a slave.

Interdisciplinary Research Featured by National Science Foundation

An interdisciplinary, environmental research project conducted by three Lafayette professors has been featured on the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) web site. The article, “Understanding How Humans Cause, Respond and Adapt to Change,” highlights 26 grants NSF has awarded through its Human and Social Dynamics Priority Area. Chris Ruebeck, assistant professor of economics & business, Sharon Jones, associate professor of civil & environmental engineering, and Jeff Pfaffmann, assistant professor of computer science, were recently awarded a $635,000 grant. The three-year award will allow the team to explore how the decisions of policy-makers interact with and affect the life-cycle of products.

Lafayette Featured in National Media

President Daniel Weiss has been quoted this week in two separate articles, one running on Yahoo! hotjobs and the other in the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The Yahoo! article, “Job Success with a Liberal Arts Degree,” discusses the many advantages a liberal arts education provides out in the workforce. The Chronicle article, “Nonprofit Group Prepares Students to Handle Demands of Life on Campus,” focuses on the Posse Foundation. Lafayette’s involvement with the Posse program has been so successful the College has also been featured on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and The New York Times.

President’s Son Teddy Weiss Featured on ‘Tempo’ Oct. 23 and 26
Teddy Weiss, the son of College President Daniel Weiss, will be featured in a “Tempo” segment running 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 and 26 on PBS Channel 39 WLVT. The 10-year-old led a PBS camera crew on a campus tour in September, showing them his favorite spots, introducing them to some of his favorite people, and providing a general look at campus life at Lafayette. Also interviewed for the piece were President Weiss, his wife Sandra, and other son Joel; Pam Brewer, associate dean of students and director of student life programs; Marie Enea, assistant to the president; David Kovach, groundskeeper in Plant Operations; Dana McFadden, housekeeper in Plant Operations; head football coach Frank Tavani; and Lou Reda, chairman of Easton-based Lou Reda Productions.

Media Coverage of the 250th Celebration
The College’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s birth has been or will be covered by more than a dozen media outlets, including the New York Times, the French Press Agency, a French television network, The Documentary Group, WLVT Channel 39, WFMZ Channel 69, and the French Embassy’s web site. The College is throwing a yearlong celebration during 2007-08 in recognition of the life and legacy of the man for whom it is named. In addition to the birthday party Sept. 6, major events include a lecture series, entitled Lives of Liberty, and a historical exhibit at the Williams
Center for the Arts, entitled A Son and his Adoptive Father: The Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington.

Marquis and 250th Celebration Highlighted in Numerous Media Outlets

Numerous media outlets have published articles today featuring both the Marquis de Lafayette and the College's yearlong celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Marquis' birth. The Agency France Press (AFP), Washington D.C., printed "Americans will not forget their debt to French nobleman Lafayette." Diane Windham Shaw, special collections librarian and College archivist, is quoted extensively throughout the article. An article written by Shaw, "Exploring Lafayette's other legacy," also appeared in today's Philadelphia Inquirer. It focuses on the Marquis' lifelong commitment to the abolition of slavery and makes mention of College's yearlong celebration.

President Daniel Weiss and Diane Windham Shaw, special collections librarian and College archivist, were interviewed live about the Marquis de Lafayette 250th celebration on WDIY's "Lehigh Valley Discourse" Wednesday, Aug. 29. Weiss and Shaw discussed Lafayette the man, Lafayette the college, and the 250th anniversary activities that will ensue over the year. “Lehigh Valley Discourse” is WDIY's highly acclaimed local affairs show examining the diversity that is the Lehigh Valley.
