December First Weekend Features Holiday Cookies, Music, and Art

Arts Community of Easton Honors Local Artists for Contributions to the Community
The Arts Community of Easton will be honoring local artists and Lafayette at its annual art awards dinner. ACE's annual awards recognize contributions that bring an awareness of the value of art as a means for positive growth and change to the Easton community. This year's recipients are Easton artist Karl Stirner as Artist of the Year, Lafayette as Patron of the Year, and Phillipsburg High School graduate Jessica Sturchio will be the first recipient of ACE's Visual Arts Scholarship.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Will Perform Dec. 2
The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the Williams Center for the Art as part of the Chamber Music series. Absent from the Williams Center for five years, Chamber Music Society returns with an all-star ensemble of 12 musicians, bearing a treasure trove of some of the most cherished baroque concertos, including Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins, Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto,” and J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 4 and 5. The ensemble features frequent Williams Center guests Ida Kavafian, Carol Wincenc, Jon Gibbons, Fred Sherry, and Paul Neubauer, along with rising stars from Lincoln Center—Lily Francis, David Kim, and Priscilla Lee.

The Fox Trot is This Month’s ‘Dancing on the Thirds’ Lesson
The Easton Main Street Initiative is hosting its monthly “Dancing on the Thirds” lesson from 8-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at the Third Street Alliance, 41 N. Third Street. The featured lesson is the Fox Trot taught by Lehigh Valley dance instructor, Con Gallagher. The lesson is followed by an evening of open dancing with a DJ from 9-11 p.m. Admission is $10, and students with a college ID pay half price. The “Dancing on the Thirds” lesson takes place on the third Friday of every month.

Vocal Ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock Performs at the Williams Center Nov. 7
Renowned a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 as part of the Williams Center’s Sound Alternative series. Founding director, Bernice Johnson Reagon, will also speak as the Jones Visiting Lecturer 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. As part of the Roethke Humanities Festival, this presentation is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. The Biblical metaphor of sweet honey in the rock - sustenance and strength - captures completely these African American women whose repertory is steeped in the sacred music of the black church, the clarion calls of the civil rights movement, and songs of the struggle for justice everywhere.

Senator Arlen Specter Will Hold Town Hall Meeting Oct. 27
United States Senator Arlen Specter will hold an open house town meeting at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 in Colton Chapel. Although the event is geared toward students, it is free and open to the public. During the meeting, students are invited to discuss issues important to the region, state, and nation. He will address the audience briefly and devote the remainder of the hour to responding to questions and concerns. "You don’t have to buy a ticket, you don’t have to make a contribution, all you have to do is come and listen a little and ask questions so that I can respond and have a better idea of what you’d like us to be doing here in Washington to represent you,” says Specter.

Travel through Time with ‘Easton through the Decades’

Guarneri String Quartet Marks 25th Anniversary of the Williams Center
The Guarneri String Quartet will perform at the William Center’s 25th anniversary concert 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 for the center’s annual “Dr. Aaron M. Litwak Concert.” In 1983, the Guarneri String Quartet played the dedication concert for the Williams Center for the Arts, launching a stellar procession of world-class ensembles that have brought inspired music-making to the concert hall ever since. The Williams Center will celebrate its landmark 25th anniversary with a rededication performance by the Guarneri quartet as they bid farewell to a towering 44-year career in their valedictory tour.

College Will Host 10-Hour Figure Drawing Marathon Oct. 18
Local and student artists are invited to draw, paint, sculpt, and create during the 10-hour figure study marathon being held from noon – 10 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Williams Visual Arts Building. Tables, easels, drawing horses, and basic drawing supplies are available. The model fee for the day is $25/artist. The program is co-sponsored by the art department and Community-Based Teaching Program. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Please bring a bag lunch or a dish or beverage to share.
