Lafayette Campus News (www.lafayette.edu), March 13, 2008 — Democratizing the Hegemonic State: Political Transformation in the Age of Identity, by Ilan Peleg, Charles A. Dana Professor of Social Science, will be the subject of discussion during the next Lafayette Author Forum 4:10 p.m. Monday, March 24 in the Gendebien Room of Skillman Library.
The book is grounded in deep, value-based conviction. Peleg says, “I believe that one of the very major human rights violations in the world today — unfortunately often ignored — is the abuse of minorities at the hand of majorities. My book puts a microscope on this phenomenon by developing a new theory on majority-minority relations, and by studying 14 cases in some detail.”
Eric J. Ziolkowski, Dana Professor and head of religious studies, and William Safran, professor emeritus of political science at University of Colorado at Boulder, will also provide comments about the text. The floor will then be opened for questions and comments from the audience.
Lafayette Author Forums, which are sponsored by the Academic Research Committee, are free and open to the public. They are designed to recognize the publication of significant scholarly achievement and to open an interdisciplinary discussion of the work in question.
