Connecting with your Roommate(s)

All first year students are assigned to double or triple rooms because we believe there is value in learning to negotiate common living space. We recognize that for some of you this experience will be an adjustment from having your own room at home. Further, we know while the prospect of making new friends is exciting, it can also be a little scary to think about sharing space with someone you don't know that well. Keeping the lines of communication open will be important as you and your roommate(s) learn to share space and to compromise so that both of you can best meet your academic and personal goals. In the end, this real world experience of getting to know someone and communicating regularly provides the opportunity for you to develop interpersonal skills that will be invaluable as you build relationships in the future. Disabilities and Accommodations

Lafayette College is committed to ensuring reasonable accommodations to students who are substantially limited by a documented disability. The provision of accommodations at the college level hinges on the determination that the student has a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992 (ADA).

If you believe that you will need accommodations or modifications at Lafayette College, you must provide appropriate documentation that verifies the existence of the disability and discusses its impact on your ability to participate in the college environment. Requirements for appropriate documentation of learning disabilities, ADHD, psychological disorders, and chronic health impairments are included on the Lafayette website listed below.

Unlike the IDEA, which requires public schools to bear the cost of psycho-educational assessment as part of the process of identifying and servicing students with learning disabilities, the ADA places the responsibility for obtaining appropriate documentation of any and all disabilities on the student. Lafayette College reviews the documentation and decides whether or not the student is disabled under the ADA. Please note that depending on the nature of the disability, different College professionals may be asked to review the documentation in order to make a proper assessment of eligibility. For those students requesting accommodations for Psychological Disorders, members of the counseling staff from The Counseling Center will be asked to review documentation. Similarly, for students requiring accommodations for Physical Disabilities, members of the medical staff from Bailey Health Center will review physicians' diagnoses and make recommendations for appropriate accommodations.

Please forward all accommodation requests to Dr. Erica Matos, Director of the Academic Resource Center and Coordinator of Disability Services in 302 Hogg Hall BEFORE JULY 1. More information regarding Disability Services can be found at: http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~deanofthecollege/arc/disability.php
